Cardiff and Vale College – an entrepreneurial education expert
Cardiff and Vale College has become the first College in Wales to be invited to join the Gazelle group; a network of Further Education institutions focused on creating a cluster of world class entrepreneurial colleges.
The Gazelle group was formed in 2011and combines the experience of successful entrepreneurs with leaders in FE and the wider public sector. It aims to regenerate the economy through fostering a new generation of entrepreneurs who can add value to their communities, bring innovation to existing businesses and create their own employment.
FE Colleges such as CAVC will be at the forefront of achieving this goal, but will have to change the way they operate to develop for the challenges of the 21st Century, Principal and Chief Executive Mike James explained. Entrepreneurship must be the key driver for strategic business change.
“We are delighted to be invited to join the Gazelle group as it shares our belief that further transformational change is needed in Further Education,” he said. “The new economy means that the traditional FE model, where students come for a year or two preparing themselves to progress into work is at best bruised. The answer lies in the development of a college where students are encouraged not only to learn and acquire new skills but are also equipped for the exploration of self employment, social entrepreneurship and pure business start-up.
“An entrepreneurial college is a college where the ethos, values and culture of learning are quintessentially distinctive and geared towards the task of business formation. Entrepreneurship will need to be far less niche, it will need to influence education and training so that an individual’s potential is fully harnessed to create truly motivational leadership.”
