Cardiff and Vale College qualifies for AoC Sport National Championships

Sam Curwen, who studies at Cardiff City Education programme, has qualified to represent Cardiff and Vale College and Wales at the AoC Sport National Championships 2017, which take place next month.

Sam fought off stiff competition from colleges across Wales to win gold, which qualifies him for the national finals taking place at the University of Nottingham and surrounding facilities over the weekend of 21-23 April.

The AoC Sport National Championships will see the team competing against athletes from colleges across England and Wales.  As well as individual glory, teams will be aiming to accumulate points for their region and win the prestigious Wilkinson Sword trophy.

Sam said: "I'm really pleased to have won the qualifying race to be selected to run for Wales and can't wait to get to Nottingham and run for my country."

James Young, CAVC Head of Sport, Tourism and Public Services, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for Sam to qualify for the second year running.  He represents the college at many athletic events and is making great progress.  He is hoping to attend Worcester University to study Sport Coaching Science with Physical Education in September.  We wish Sam all the best in the National Championships and his future career.”

AoC Sport Managing Director, Marcus Kingwell, said: “We are really excited about this year’s National Championships, which will be hosted at state-of-the-art facilities in Nottingham.  “Ours will be the first major Multi-Sports event to take place at the David Ross Sports Village, and we believe the standard of the facilities will provide students with an incredible experience. “We could even see a future Olympic champion in action at the Championships.”

The AoC Sport National Championships are now in their 39th year and remain the largest student sporting event in the UK, with nearly 1,800 students taking part last year. Colleges will compete in 13 different sports over a three-day period, taking place in some of the best facilities in the country.
