Cardiff and Vale College salons stay open through the summer

Cardiff and Vale College Hair & Beauty students will be staying on at College over the summer holidays in order to keep its top class salons open to the public.

The salons are keeping their doors open throughout the holidays as the Hair & Beauty Department gears up to forming a learning company - a fully-fledged commercial enterprise that students will run themselves 52 weeks a year, with remuneration, to help them develop their business acumen.

Learning companies are the brainchild of the Gazelle Group of entrepreneurial colleges, of which CAVC is the only Welsh member.

The Academi in Barry and the Design Academy in Castle Arcade, Cardiff, will remain open throughout July and August. Level 3 Hairdressing students will be operating across the salons and two students who have just completed their courses are staying on through the summer for valuable work experience

Angela Simpson will see clients in the Academi’s private salon for beauty treatments. She has successfully completed a Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Treatments.

“When I heard that the salon was going to be running through the summer I thought that would be a great opportunity to get some experience,” Angela said. “I’m my own boss in that I’m the only one doing treatments.”

Angela and her husband moved to St Athan from Canada as part of his work for the RAF. After supporting her husband through a law degree, Angela decided she wanted to get back into education herself.

“It’s my turn to do something new!” Angela explained. “College has been excellent – everyone has been really good and extremely supportive. I’ve had some lovely course tutors. I wouldn’t have made it through without them.”

Angela has applied to do a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the College, and would like eventually to teach at CAVC.

Another former student, Katie Williams who is qualified in Beauty and Complementary Therapies, will provide treatments in the Design Academy in Cardiff.

Academi Manager Elaine Jones said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain some invaluable experience over the summer holidays and to prepare them for the world of work. It will also help us gain some insight into setting up a learning company where the students will be able to get a real experience of what it is like to run your own business.”
