Cardiff and Vale College students clean up at Ogmore

Spa & Complementary Therapies students from Cardiff and Vale College recently swapped their beauty products for bin bags and litter pickers during a trip to Ogmore.

The students took part in a beach clean-up in association with Keep Wales Tidy as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification. The event also covers Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC) and wellbeing elements of their education and training.

“As part of their course we use a marine-based product house company called Thalgo for use in the spa treatments,” Spa Therapy Lecturer Louise McCarthy said. “We were supported in the trip by Thalgo, which provides the algae for the detoxifying wrap treatments that we now offer in our Department.”

Thalgo also donated facial products for the Department to raffle off to students. Money raised has been donated to the British Heart Foundation – Holistic & Beauty Therapies Lecturer Catherine Hillier will trek across the Sahara this month to raise funds for the Foundation.

Cardiff and Vale College offers an extensive range of courses and bespoke training to support the hairdressing, beauty, complementary and spa therapies industry in partnership with employers across Wales. It has excellent training facilities on site at City Road and Colcot Road, both with commercial salons open to the public and the Design Academy in Castle Arcade Cardiff which is open throughout the year.
