CILEx student achieves highest mark nationally at Cardiff and Vale College
A Cardiff and Vale College student training to be a legal executive was awarded the highest mark in the June exams by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx).
Kirsty Hier, who previously achieved a high distinction in her first year, was awarded the top grade this year in the CILEx Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice, Criminal Litigation. With high distinctions in both years of the course, Kirsty is now a contender to become national CILEx student of the year.
Cardiff and Vale College’s CILEx students’ pass rates were more than 9% higher than the national average, maintaining the college’s consistently strong results. Students studying Civil Litigation, Legal Research and Client Care Skills achieved a 100% pass rate for a second year running.
“All Level 6 Civil Litigation students passed their exam in June and are a step closer to Fellowship," CILEx Courses Coordinator Max Weedon said. “The result far exceeded national comparators, which remained at 66%. In addition, the college had 3 times as many distinctions at L6 than in 2013.”
One student who received a Distinction was Leanne Greenhough, who works for Newlaw Solicitors.
“I approached Cardiff and Vale College in my final year of my CILEx studies,” Leanne said. “I had undertaken Client Care Skills and Civil Litigation at a different college and unfortunately received no support.
“I work full time in a law firm and striking a balance between working life and academic studies is particularly challenging in itself, more so due to the extra effort I had to put in to secure a good mark as there was no support network in place. I achieved a Distinction but this was harder due to a lack of support available at the College.
“Cardiff and Vale College had been recommended to me by a friend. As I had experienced another college, I am able to say that Cardiff and Vale College offered me a huge amount of support and assistance.
“My College tutor was extremely approachable and it was clear from the outset that he wanted his students to succeed and was willing to go the extra mile to help us do that. This involved extra material vital to achieving high marks in the exam and a good structure to the course which meant there was plenty of time to go over past papers and the examiner’s answers before the exam. He also arranged feedback classes following mock papers to ensure that you understood the areas that could be improved. Also if you had a query, I found that my tutor would get back to me very quickly which was helpful.
“I went on to achieve another Distinction at Cardiff and Vale College in my final year which I was extremely pleased with. This was considerably higher than my first and was achieved with greater ease due to the support network available. I felt more prepared going into the exam which is not something I had experienced in my first year at a different college. I would highly recommend Cardiff and Vale College and wish that I had attended from day one.”
