About this course

This course is delivered by Cardiff University and provides an overview of what it is like to work in a cleanroom environment for nanoscale production. It covers typical working practices as well as general principles for safe working.

This course has been developed by the University in collaboration with industry partners from the CSconnected cluster, the world’s first compound semiconductor cluster based in and around South Wales in the United Kingdom.

What you will study

The content of this course relates to cleanrooms for nanoscale production. By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • describe the different classifications of cleanroom facilities, from ISO1-9 and their equivalents
  • explain why cleanrooms are necessary and why there are different types of cleanrooms
  • understand how a typical cleanroom works
  • know the general principles required to enter and work in a cleanroom environment
  • explain why those principles are important
  • describe general health & safety risks of working in a typical cleanroom
  • know how to mitigate general health & safety risks and deal with general safety incidents

Teaching and assessement

This is an online course that you can undertake in your own time. The training will take approximately an hour to complete. Delivery will be via a variety of online and interactive activities such as short videos, a 3D virtual experience of a cleanroom, and test-your-knowledge exercises.

You will have access for 1 month from the date you first access the learning materials. There is no live element but there is the facility to pose questions to the tutor. The course will be delivered via the University's virtual learning platform, Learning Central. Your individual login details will be emailed to you a few days before your course access begins. A CPD Certificate of Completion will be issued to learners who achieve 70% or more in the end of course test.

This is a multiple-choice test.
