About this course

This course is for learners interested in working in the construction industry, this course would help to prepare you for work in the carpentry and joinery sector of construction. This course is a perfect opportunity to develop practical skills needed by some employers in the industry, whilst giving you underpinning knowledge.

What you will study

Students need to achieve 39 credits for the diploma. Credits come from the mandatory group below:

• Health and Safety
• Principles of building, construction and communication
• Maintain and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
• Produce woodworking joints
• Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power joints


Teaching and assessment methods

Teaching and assessment methods: The qualification will be have a number of practical and theory based units that will be delivered in the classroom and the workshop. Assessment methods will be practical projects and online unit tests.

Entry requirements

Students need to be under 19 years of age.

Career prospects & further study

£30,000

According to Lightcast 2022 data, the construction sector is due to grow by 9.1% in the Cardiff Capital Region between 2022-2026, with an average wage over £30,000 per year.

On completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery, students will be able to progress onto a L2 construction foundation course. In some instances students might be given an opportunity to study on a carpentry progression qualification.
