About this course

Aerospace is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK with exciting opportunities to work in Wales and across the world. The sector has seen consistent growth in recent years, and supports a growing number of high-skill, high-value jobs. If you have a passion for aircraft, or you simply wish to develop into an engineer with wide and varied engineering skills applicable across a wide range of industries, then this course is right for you.

The programme will be delivered at our International Centre for Aerospace Training.

Tuition is provided by experienced engineering staff who have relevant industrial experience in the aeronautical engineering sector.

What you will study

This course is ideal for those wanting to progress into aerospace technology management or gain professional recognition, by progressing to Incorporated Engineer Status. The course covers

Year 1 (full time) – level 4:

  • Engineering Design
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Managing a Professional Engineering Project
  • Aircraft Aerodynamics
  • Aircraft Electrical Power and Distribution Systems
  • CAD/CAM
  • Airframe Mechanical Systems

The programme is modular in design and students will study the equivalent of 120 credits per academic year (full time equivalent).

  • Teaching methods include lectures, whole group information-giving sessions, workshops, tutorials, practical work, and blended e-learning and group critiques.
  • Assessment for the course is designed, where possible, to simulate the variety of tasks that graduates from the programme may encounter in relevant employment. Where necessary other academic assessment devices, such as a formal examination are also used.
  • The practical work will reflect real-world techniques that practitioners would encounter in the aerospace industry.

Entry requirements

For students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include 48 UCAS tariff points gained from one of the following: ● A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering (ideally with a Merit profile) ● A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) ● Other related Level 3 qualifications ● An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution ● Related work experience ● An international equivalent of the above.

Students that successfully complete their level 4 studies can exit with a HNC in Aeronautical Engineering and will be able to progress on to a level 5 HND qualification or to industry employment in the aerospace sector.
