Essential Skills in the Workplace

Essential skills in the workplace

Increase the skills and confidence of your staff with workplace training and qualifications.

Essential Skills in the Workplace offers you the chance to address skills in the workplace, such as literacy, language and numeracy. Of those surveyed in 2010, 45% of employed adults in Wales were found to be at Entry level (pre-GCSE) for numeracy and 36% below Level 2 (GCSE A-C grade) for literacy.

Through training, your staff can increase their skills and grow in confidence as a direct consequence of taking part. Your business can benefit from having people who are better skilled and far more committed to their jobs.

We will come to you and tailor training to your needs, supporting you every step of the way. Courses can be held at your workplace or at a College site on a day and time that is convenient to you.

What our students have to say:

Robert has worked for At Seat Catering/ Arriva Trains Wales for the last 13 years and is a supervisor based in Newport. He left school with CSEs in Maths and Metalwork and spent time working with a building contractor before joining the Armed Forces at the age of 20. Robert heard about Arriva Trains Wales’ Learning Partnership Programme in collaboration with ASLEF Union, from his manager and was able to explore opportunities open to him. Cardiff and Vale College offered Rob a communication course which is a combination of literacy and computer skills. The College arranged his classes to fit around his work pattern. Since starting his course Rob’s confidence has improved, as has spelling and concentration. Robert is continuing his studies, and has agreed to become an Arriva Trains Wales Essential Skill Learning Champion to help promote the benefits of brushing up on your skills, or learning new ones, to his workmates across the company.

“The course is very good. Interesting. A good laugh. I’ve been researching on computers, learning all different things and different subjects. My manager has noticed an improvement in communications, writing and spelling. The company has been very supportive regarding flexibility with rosters. It is a pity that not more people know about what is available to them, to get involved. Some people lack the confidence to come forward. If they are scared, there is no need to be.”
